It encourages the user to join so that they can post recipes, as well as rate recipes, but anyone can look up and use these recipes. The site makes money through advertising. Users can create grocery lists based on the recipe and it is stated that if the user makes a purchase using the links attached, the site may make a commission. There are also adds running at the side of each recipe as users search through the site.
